The Clinical Research Team Leader plays a pivotal role in leading, coordinating, and advancing a high ‑ quality portfolio of clinical research across the service. The post ‑ holder will provide expert operational and clinical leadership to ensure that all studies are delivered safely, ethically, and efficiently, in full alignment with regulatory requirements, Good Clinical Practice, and Trust policy. As a visible and supportive leader, the post-holder will foster a positive research culture, champion participant ‑ centred care, develop team capability, and drive continuous improvement to support the growth and excellence of research activity at NUH.

Main duties of the job

  • Demonstrate strong research ‑ specific skills to ensure the safe, effective, and compliant delivery of clinical studies across the service.
  • Expert knowledge of research governance and regulation including Good Clinical Practice (GCP), ethical frameworks, MHRA/HRA requirements, GDPR, and Trust research policies, ensuring all studies are delivered to the highest legal and professional standards.
  • Study feasibility and portfolio management oversight including assessment of deliverability, resource needs, patient population, suitability and capacity planning.
  • Risk identification and mitigation ability to recognise operational, clinical, and data ‑ related risks within studies and implement proactive strategies to maintain patient/participant safety, protocol compliance and study integrity.
  • Lead, co‑ordinate and be accountable for the delivery of research studies and management of patient/participant care, ensuring safe staffing levels and effective use of resources.
  • Ensure concerns raised by patients, participants and their families are dealt with in an open, honest and transparent way, quickly and effectively, in line with Trust policies, procedures and Duty of Candour legislation.

Performance monitoring and improvement close tracking of recruitment, follow‑ups, milestones and KPIs. Also includes ability to analyse performance data and take actions to optimise study delivery.

Participant ‑ centred research practice ensuring high ‑ quality informed consent processes, clear communication of complex information, and a positive, safe experience for all research participants.

Safety reporting and oversight ability to support investigators with adverse event recognition, documentation, and reporting in line with governance/regulatory timelines and sponsor requirements.

Person specification

Training and Qualifications

  • Professional knowledge acquired through obtaining a degree (BSc Hons in Nursing/health related studies), supplemented by clinical experience.
  • Evidence of training undertaken in research governance and regulations, for example, Good Clinical Practice and the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research.
  • Evidence of leadership and management training.

Experience

  • Extensive experience of clinical research delivery within the NHS setting including an understanding of research governance legislation and regulations
  • Recent clinical experience including ability to undertake venepuncture and cannulation.
  • Ability to manage a broad portfolio of trials.
  • Line management/appraisals experience within the NHS including identifying/reporting staff needs.

Communication

  • Demonstrate negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Team player who can initiate, delegate and complete projects.
  • Demonstrate self‑awareness and understanding of personal accountability.
  • Able to support colleagues, patients/participants and relatives/carers in distressing circumstances.

Physical Skills

  • Demonstrate competence and accuracy in undertaking clinical skills, using equipment and documentation
  • Confident in the use of a range of software programmes.
  • Competent and capable of using medical equipment.
