Southwark Council is seeking an experienced Lead Content Designer for an interim project engagement based at 160 Tooley Street, SE1 2QH. Paying £358.91-£500.00 per day, the role starts 3 August 2026 on a hybrid working pattern (Mondays to Fridays, one day in-office on Wednesdays).
Reporting to the Web and Digital Lead, you will provide strategic oversight of content standards, governance, and publishing quality across Southwark’s digital platforms, while leading and mentoring a team of Content Design Officers day to day. You will define and implement content strategies, own style guides and reusable content patterns, and work with service teams and stakeholders to improve how the council communicates with residents.
Key responsibilities include championing user-centred content design principles; using analytics, search data, and user research to drive continuous improvement; leading content reviews and collaborative workshops; and supporting the council’s broader digital transformation ambitions.
Candidates should bring proven experience leading content design in a complex organisation, ideally local government or the wider public sector. Strong knowledge of GDS content principles, WCAG accessibility standards, plain English writing, and content management systems (LocalGov Drupal preferred) is essential, alongside demonstrable stakeholder management and coaching skills.
