An exciting opportunity has arisen for a nurse to join our team as a full-time, permanent Band 7, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Diabetes. This post will be based at Southampton General Hospital, part of University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, however, cross site working may be required.

We are looking for experienced, highly motivated and enthusiastic nurses who have proven experience in the speciality of inpatient diabetes.

You will have a major role in delivering excellent diabetes care to inpatients with opportunities to support in Continuous Insulin infusion devices (pump), maternal diabetes and endocrine (alongside your fellow band 7 team). You will be expected to work autonomously to develop and lead on a specialism within diabetes.

You will act as a specialist resource and provide specialist advice in relation to care of people with diabetes and provide a range of educational and training programmes for the multidisciplinary team, patients, families and carers.

Support will be given to the post holders to develop their skills, experience and competence in all spheres of diabetes nursing. The successful candidate will work across professional, departmental and Trust boundaries as required to develop and support patient-centred seamless care, with particular responsibility for leading nurse-led care initiatives.

The successful candidate will work alongside a team of band 7’s within the diabetes and endocrine service and line manage a small team of staff.

The service currently run a Monday-Friday service, but weekend working may be an option in the future/as per service need. Flexible working hours can be considered but on site working is essential in this patient facing service.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience

Essential criteria

  • Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC register
  • Level 7 Post Grad Cert (Min 60 Credits), Master’s Degree within relevant speciality or equivalent knowledge to be assessed through evidence of relevant speciality training, experience or portfolio
  • Specialist training / Qualification in area of practice
  • Provide evidence of leading learning in practice
  • Evidence of experience and completion of all band 6 competencies within relevant speciality
  • Specialist clinical skills and experience within specialist area
  • Evidence of change Management, leadership and innovation
  • Clinical experience at Band 6 or equivalent within relevant speciality
  • Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote learning in practice providing an excellent learning environment for all
  • Provide evidence of supporting / managing and supervision of a range of learnings in practice

Desirable criteria

  • Counselling / advanced communication skills qualification / training
  • Act in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners / supporting challenges as needed
  • Multidisciplinary team working
  • Experience of nurse-led care / clinics in own practice
  • Team leadership role
  • Awareness of own leadership skills/style
  • Registered as an independent prescriber
