Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is recruiting talented, committed individuals who share our vision, values and professional ambition. We currently have an opportunity to join our Pre-operative Assessment team at The Alexandra Hospital, Redditch.
Job Description
As a Band 3 Healthcare Assistant, you will be responsible for seeing patients in the Pre-operative Assessment support clinic and undertaking investigations relevant to the patients’ Pre-operative Assessment. This includes, but is not limited to, venepuncture, ECGs, MRSA swabbing and CPE sampling.
The role also includes supporting our digitally excluded patients to complete their My Pre-Op Questionnaire online via telephone appointments. You will also undertake thorough documentation and the use of IT is integral to the job role.
Applicant must have evidence of venepuncture and ECG competence.
Main Duties
- Assist with general aspects of care: patient booking, greeting patients, relatives & visitors, and ascertaining the purpose of their visit.
- Moving and handling of patients, assisting patients and relatives to use wheelchairs, and mobility support.
- Dress/undress patients when undertaking investigations.
- Safekeeping of patients’ property/valuables.
- Escort patients to and from lavatory.
- Assist the multidisciplinary team to prepare and support patients.
- Chaperone professional staff where appropriate.
- Measure blood pressure, body temperature, pulse, respiration, height, and weight; complete necessary documentation.
- Undertake investigations such as ECG, venepuncture, MRSA swabs, and CPE sampling.
- Be adaptable and flexible to working in various areas of the department as required.
- Clean and tidy clinic areas; replenish stock cupboards.
- Prepare clinical rooms for patient clinics and maintain stock levels.
- Manage HCA pre‑operative assessment clinics and escalates any concerns to trained nurses.
- Communicate with patients of varying needs and maintain confidentiality.
- Report concerns to nurse in charge and participate in unit reports and meetings.
- Demonstrate knowledge of health and safety at work.
- Assist in patient handovers and maintain a professional image.
- Support other HCAs through mentorship and induction.

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is a large, acute and specialised hospital trust that provides a range of local acute services to the residents of Worcestershire and more specialised services to a larger population in Herefordshire and beyond. The Trust operates hospital‑based services from three sites in Kidderminster, Redditch and Worcester.
Qualifications and Experience
- Previous experience as a Health Care Assistant in an acute hospital environment.
- Experience in a POA environment.
- NVQ Level 3 in Direct Care, or equivalent, or willingness to work towards.
- Key skills in literacy and numeracy.
- Ability to mentor and supervise other HCAs / Student Nurses.
- ECG trained.
- Computer literate and familiar with Trust IT systems such as Bluespier, CLIP, ICE, Sunrise and PAS.
- Fitness and mobility to be physically active throughout a shift and undertake manual handling activities.
- Confidentiality and flexibility with shift patterns and internal rotation.
- Willingness to work in other departments as required.
