Lower GI Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist

The Cancer Team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital is looking to appoint a Band 7 Macmillan Lower GI Cancer Nurse Specialist. This role offers a unique opportunity for a nurse with extensive experience as a senior band 6 or band 7 within GI medicine and/or cancer care to expand clinical skills and support an expanding service.
Responsibilities
- Provide specialist, high‑quality, expert nursing care and support for patients and carers with a lower GI cancer diagnosis.
- Deliver evidence‑based, individualised patient care through holistic needs assessment (HNA) and in line with changing health‑care needs.
- Work autonomously and foster collaborative relationships across and within professional boundaries.
- Develop patient pathways and take responsibility for the nursing service.
- Offer expert knowledge and advice in the specialist area, ensuring clinical excellence underpinned by evidence‑based practice.
- Collaborate with the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and Cancer Management Team to ensure compliance with national safety and quality standards.
- Act as a visible role model and expert practitioner.
- Help deliver cancer waiting‑times targets and pathway communication within the MDT.
- Serve as a specialist resource by providing comprehensive advice, teaching and training both within PAHT and to external partners.
- Update clinical knowledge, contribute to audit processes and, where appropriate, undertake nursing research with published outcomes.
- Promote excellence in clinical practice and set quality standards within the specialty.
- Engage in local and national service development activities.
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse.
- Recognised teaching or mentorship qualification.
- Post‑registration qualification relevant to the specialty.
- Evidence of continued professional development.
- Master’s degree or working towards one.
- Advanced assessment skills.
- Independent Nurse Prescribing course or willingness to undertake.
- Advanced communication skills training.
- Level 2 psychological skills training.
Experience
- Substantial post‑registration experience in GI medicine and/or oncology.
- Previous experience in a post involving clinical and managerial responsibilities.
- Evidence of teaching and development of teaching materials.
- Demonstrated highly developed clinical practice.
- Knowledge of current advances and care pathways relevant to the specialty.
- Proven evidence of improving the patient experience.
- Experience of undertaking nurse‑led clinics.
- Previous experience as a clinical nurse specialist.
- Experience of research and audit.

Salary
£51,657 to £58,785 per year, including high‑cost area supplements (HCAS).
