Main duties of the job

An Associate Practitioner Healthcare Scientist is required to perform a range of analyses in the NNUH Blood Sciences Laboratory covering Haematology / Transfusion.

Job responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the preparation of reagents and complex automated analyzers for treatment, investigations or procedures as directed by departmental procedures under the guidance of an HCPC registered BMS.
  • Receive large volumes of samples, check and examine electronic and paper requests, accurately select test profiles according to specimen type, clinical details and collection conditions and transfer requests on to the laboratory information system.
  • Perform a range of simple tests, assays and operate complex automated instruments, if appropriate, following standard operational procedures and validate according to departmental policy, with minimal guidance.
  • Separate and prepare specimens for referral by post to external laboratories.
  • Act as a role model to others and consistently demonstrate NNUH’s PRIDE values of People focused, Respect, Dedication, Integrity and Excellence.

Qualifications

  • Foundation degree or Certificate of Achievement Part 2
  • Basic understanding of good laboratory practice and health and safety.

Skills

  • Ability to use laboratory equipment ranging from manual pipettes to microscopes.
  • Ability to perform a range of tests appropriate to the post.
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team under supervision.

Experience

  • Experience using a laboratory information management system.
  • Significant experience in Pathology.
  • Effective role model, demonstrating NNUH’s PRIDE values of People focused, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence.
