Medical Receptionist

Bigham Road Medical Centre is looking to recruit a friendly, organised and professional Medical Receptionist to join our welcoming and supportive practice team.

As the first point of contact for our patients, you will play a vital role in creating a positive experience by providing a high standard of customer service and ensuring the smooth running of our busy reception. You will be responsible for managing appointments, handling patient enquiries, processing administrative tasks and supporting our clinical team to deliver safe, effective patient care.

This is a 30 hour per week position, worked on a rota basis between 7:45am and 6:30pm, Monday to Friday; flexibility is essential.

Whether you already have experience working in general practice or have strong customer service and administrative skills from another sector, we would love to hear from you. Full training will be provided for the right candidate.

Main responsibilities

  • Receive patients and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Answer incoming telephone calls promptly and deal with enquiries appropriately.
  • Book, amend and cancel appointments in accordance with practice procedures.
  • Register new patients and maintain accurate patient records.
  • Process repeat prescription requests.
  • Scan, file and distribute clinical correspondence.
  • Handle confidential patient information in accordance with GDPR and practice policies.
  • Take payments where applicable and issue receipts.
  • Maintain a clean, tidy and welcoming reception area.
  • Support clinicians and colleagues with administrative tasks as required.
  • Participate in team meetings and mandatory training.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties appropriate to the role, as requested by the Practice Manager.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, carers and visitors.
  • Develop positive working relationships with colleagues and members of the wider Primary Care Network.
  • Deal with enquiries professionally, sensitively and confidentially.
  • Escalate concerns or issues to the Practice Manager where appropriate.
  • Work safely and follow practice health and safety policies; report hazards, incidents or accidents promptly.
  • Support the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion, treating all patients, colleagues and visitors with dignity and respect.

Qualifications and experience

  • Good standard of general education, including GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
  • Previous experience in a customer service or reception role, ideally in a GP practice or healthcare setting.
  • Experience of working with the public, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Professional, reliable and flexible approach to work.
  • Experience using GP clinical systems such as EMIS Web.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and data protection requirements.
  • Knowledge of NHS primary care services.
  • Friendly and approachable, calm and professional manner, positive attitude with a willingness to learn.
  • Compassionate and patient‑focused, able to use initiative while following practice policies and procedures.

Working pattern and remuneration

The position is 30 hours per week, worked on a rota basis between 7:45am and 6:30pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility across these hours is essential. No weekend working. Salary is the National Minimum Wage.
