Career Teachers is recruiting an experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a supportive and dynamic school in Leeds from September. This is a full-time, ongoing position, supporting Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
The role is initially being offered through Career Teachers, with the opportunity for the successful candidate to secure a permanent contract with the school.
The Role
Working alongside teaching staff and pastoral teams, you will support students who may display challenging behaviours and require additional emotional and behavioural support to access education successfully.
You will play a vital role in building positive relationships, promoting engagement, and helping young people develop the skills and confidence needed to thrive both in and out of the classroom.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting KS3 and KS4 students with SEMH needs on a 1:1 and small-group basis
- Managing and de-escalating challenging behaviours in a calm and professional manner
- Encouraging positive behaviour, self‑regulation, and engagement with learning
- Building trusting relationships with students who may have experienced significant barriers to education
- Working collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, and external professionals
- Supporting students’ social, emotional, and academic development
- Promoting a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
The Ideal Candidate
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Experience supporting young people with SEMH needs
- Proven experience managing challenging behaviour within an education, youth work, care, or similar setting
- Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
- A calm, patient, and resilient approach
- Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities
- A genuine passion for helping vulnerable young people achieve positive outcomes
Experience managing challenging behaviours is essential for this role.
