Responsibilities
As part of this role, you will be required to carry out a variety of tasks, often in residential care homes or in sheltered accommodation. Tasks may include plumbing, electrical repairs, gardening or painting/decorating.
Earnings
The rate for a maintenance worker is usually between £11-15 depending on the role. If you become Head of estates, the salary can be as much as £50,000 p.a.
Skills and values
- Good verbal, digital, written and numeracy skills
- Understanding or experience in social care settings
- Background in plumbing or electrical work
- Good knowledge of health and safety in the workplace
Entry requirements
Although there are no set qualifications for entry level, previous experience in the above areas may help. It is necessary to have good written, verbal and numeracy skills and where possible, some experience working in health or social care.

Any role that gives you experience in areas such as plumbing, painting and decoration, electrics or gardening.

Opportunities to develop
With more experience, you can undertake training to broaden your role. You may complete a qualification such as an apprenticeship, continue earning and working while studying. There may also be opportunities to progress into more senior maintenance roles, or to work in a different part of the sector such as a care assistant or personal assistant.
