Job Description:

Operational Manager – Acute Medicine

Location: Channel Islands

Contract: 6–12 months

Level: Band 8A–8B / Assistant General Manager equivalent

Working arrangement: On-site

We are recruiting an experienced Operational Manager to provide interim leadership across a busy Acute Medicine portfolio within the Channel Islands.

This is a 6–12 month contract opportunity, supporting the service while it recruits to the substantive position. It will suit an experienced Band 8A–8B or Assistant General Manager-level operator who enjoys being close to service delivery and is comfortable taking ownership of complex day-to-day operational pressures.

The role

Reporting to the General Manager and working closely with the Clinical Lead and senior nursing team, you will take operational responsibility for a varied portfolio that currently includes:

  • Emergency Department
  • Acute Assessment Unit
  • Sexual health
  • Neurology
  • Other specialist medical pathways

There is some flexibility around the exact portfolio depending on the successful candidate’s experience.

Key responsibilities

  • Day-to-day operational ownership across designated services
  • Waiting-list and PTL recovery
  • Budget management and delivery of CIP targets
  • Workforce planning and frontline staff deployment
  • Management of operational pressures and escalations
  • Patient-flow and capacity improvement
  • Risk management, governance and performance oversight
  • Service redesign, business planning and project delivery
  • Working within a clinical and managerial triumvirate

About you

You will have:

  • Acute hospital operational management experience at Band 8A–8B, AGM or equivalent level
  • A strong record of delivery against performance, workforce and financial targets
  • Experience managing operational escalations and pressured frontline services
  • The confidence to work closely with consultants, matrons and senior executives
  • A practical, delivery-focused leadership style
  • The resilience and flexibility required for a complex interim assignment

This is not a purely strategic or desk-based role. The successful candidate must be comfortable leading from the front and taking responsibility for the operational heavy lifting required to keep services safe, effective and moving forward.

Engagement options

There are two potential engagement routes, subject to individual circumstances and final commercial arrangements:

  • A direct fixed-term appointment with Jersey, which may involve temporarily relocating your tax status to the island and benefitting from the 20% flat tax rate.
  • A standard daily rate contract arrangement, broadly aligned to Band 8A–8B pro rata

Relocation and accommodation support may be available for eligible candidates and will be discussed individually.
