We are expanding our provision of technical education with new facilities scheduled to open in September 2026, which will offer industry-standard workshops and classrooms for our Electrical Installation and Plumbing provision. As part of our continued growth, we are seeking passionate and skilled professionals to join our team and help shape the next generation of tradespeople.

In this role, you will maintain and undertake simple repairs for the Electrical Installation equipment within the Section, assist lecturers in preparing equipment and resources for teaching and learning and ensure Health and Safety is complied with. You will also supervise students working in the workshops and in practical lessons (with or without a Lecturer present), instruct and support students and work closely with the other Technicians to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the area.

We are seeking someone who can demonstrate:

  • Experience gained within the Electrical Installation industry
  • Experience of working in a training environment or with young people
  • The ability to manage and monitor learners in a workshop environment
  • The ability to work effectively without supervision
  • Willingness to become a practising First Aider in the College

MAIN SCOPE OF POST:

To ensure general maintenance and undertake simple repairs for the equipment within the Electrical Installation Section. To provide assistance to lecturers in preparing equipment and resources for teaching and learning, be responsible for maintaining tool and equipment levels to an efficient level and carry out risk assessments and recommend improvements to ensure all aspects of health and safety are complied with.

BACKGROUND

As part of our continued growth, we are seeking passionate and skilled professionals to join our team and help shape the next generation of tradespeople.

DUTIES:

  • To regularly service and maintain tools and equipment within the Electrical Installation Section.
  • To carry out risk assessment in conjunction with the Course Team Leader, Section Manager and Head of School and recommend improvements.
  • To report any major maintenance tasks to the Section Manager/Head of School to ensure the least impact to teaching and learning.
  • To raise purchase order request forms in order to maintain stock levels of materials and tools at a level which enables effective teaching and learning.
  • To maintain cleanliness of teaching environments within the area of responsibility.
  • To liaise with the Head of School to ensure that all areas comply with health and safety and environmental requirements.
  • To assist course teams in preparing materials and resources for teaching and learning.
  • To assist the Lecturers in setting up equipment for teaching and learning within the postholder’s area of responsibility.
  • To be willing to undertake first aid training and a willingness to become a first aider within the College.
  • To supervise, with or without the Lecturer present, students working within the workshops with respect to health and safety and good working practice issues.
  • To supervise students during practical lessons, support practical tasks, instruct students and demonstrate suitable techniques in relation to tasks set by the Lecturer.
  • To work with other Technicians to ensure continuity of provision across the School of Engineering – Technology and Innovation

Qualifications:

  • Relevant qualification in Electrical Installation
  • Willingness to become a first aider

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Relevant experience in the Electrical Installation industry
  • Up-to-date knowledge of Health and Safety requirements, particularly applied to a workshop environment
  • Ability to instruct students and demonstrate techniques effectively in a workshop environment
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with young people aged 16-19
  • Experience of working in a training environment or with young people
  • Able to work effectively without supervision
