Job Description:

As a Principal Commercial Officer, you will manage Domestic Commercial contracts throughout the contract life cycle—from bidding and negotiation to execution and closure.

Salary: Circa £50,000 depending on experience.

Dynamic (hybrid) working: 2-3 days per week on‑site.

Security Clearance: British Citizen or a Dual UK national with British citizenship. All successful candidates will undergo HMG Basic Personnel Security Standard checks (BPSS), managed by the MBDA Personnel Security Team.

The opportunity

The opportunity is to join an active, involved and motivated team committed to delivering Defence Capability to the UK Armed Forces and other customers.

Responsibilities

  • Business Winning – Play a key role in the winning of new contracts and agreements of medium to high complexity.
  • Support the full Route to Contract, protecting MBDA’s business interests and generating proposals during the bidding process.
  • Negotiations – Gain acceptance and agreement on issues and amendments to ensure contractual compliance within agreed boundaries.
  • Contract Management – Ensure MBDA meets its promises to customers on contracts, including change management, problem solving and administration.
  • Commercial Risk and Opportunity Management – Identify risks and opportunities associated with bids and contracts and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Build and maintain relationships with new and existing customers and industry partners, focusing on collaboration.
  • Act as the interface with internal project teams to provide commercial advice, communicate with stakeholders at all levels and report to senior management.
  • Represent the commercial team in progress reviews and customer meetings.
  • Work under pressure to achieve deadlines and maintain day‑to‑day administration and maintenance of the Commercial Information Systems.
  • Promote best practice and functional excellence.
  • Provide supervisory/guidance over more junior staff, including graduates and business apprentices.

Qualifications

  • Advanced negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent process and change management abilities.
  • Experience managing complex, high‑value contracts.
  • Effective teamwork, influencing and collaboration skills.
  • Broad commercial knowledge across bidding and contract management throughout the contract lifecycle.
  • Commercial understanding from customer through to supplier.
  • Awareness and practical application of Intellectual Property protection.
  • Strong knowledge of contract law, ability to draft or modify terms and conditions.
  • Understanding of liabilities and risk mitigation.
  • Awareness of Import and Export restrictions and licensing requirements.
  • Ability to use pricing and costing models.
  • Good knowledge of IT and business tools, including SAP.
