Mentor for a young adult affected by Cystic Fibrosis

Our mentoring service offers an opportunity to support a young adult aged 18 or over with Cystic Fibrosis. Mentors will meet one-to-one for about three hours every two weeks, providing emotional support, conversation and activities such as sport or arts.

Responsibilities

  • Build a trusting relationship and support the young adult with daily life challenges.
  • Engage in activities to help develop life skills.
  • Attend meetings for a minimum commitment of one year.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Good listening skills, patience, reliability and an adaptable attitude.
  • Minimum of a full driving licence held for at least two years and access to a smoke‑free car.
  • Within a reasonable distance of the young adult’s home.

Training and Support

Induction on one day covering Cystic Fibrosis, the befriending process, interpersonal skills and Trust procedures. One team day per year for ongoing training. Support from a befriending co‑ordinator.

Travel Expenses

Travel costs including mileage, postage/stationery, refreshments and cost of activities/materials when appropriate are reimbursed.

Availability

  • Monday through Sunday
  • Morning, afternoon, evening

Commitment

Meetings are typically fortnightly and last 2-3 hours. Times are agreed with the young adult.

Benefits

  • Expenses reimbursed.
  • Volunteers aged 21–25 can claim Saltire Award hours.
