Role Overview

We are seeking a proactive Patient Care Assistant to join our Dispensary team. This team member will play a vital role in supporting the clinical team by ensuring the efficient management of the veterinary dispensary and stock throughout the practice.

The role is responsible for maintaining accurate stock levels, preparing medications under the direction of the Veterinary Surgeons and Registered Veterinary Nurses and ensuring that dispensary operates safely, efficiently and in accordance with the practice policies and relevant legislation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and dispense medications as directed by the Veterinary Surgeon or Registered Veterinary Nurses, within the scope of the role
  • Accurately label and package medications
  • Maintain an organised, clean and compliant dispensary and stock room
  • Rotate stock to ensure products are used before expiry
  • Assist with prescription preparation
  • Ensure controlled drugs and prescription-only medications are handled in accordance with legal requirements and practice protocols
  • Report discrepancies or shortages promptly
  • Place and receive orders from suppliers
  • Laise with suppliers regarding back stock, returns and product availability
  • Carry out yearly stock auditing

Person Specification

Essential

  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Good numerical and IT skills
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities
  • Ability to prioritise workload and work independently
  • Be proactive and reliable

Desirable but not essential

  • Hold an SQP qualification
  • Previous stock or dispensary management experience
  • Knowledge of veterinary medicines and inventory systems
  • Understand health and safety procedures
