The Credit Controller is responsible for managing customer accounts to ensure timely collection of outstanding debts, minimising credit risk, and maintaining positive customer relationships. The role supports company cash flow by proactively monitoring aged debt, resolving payment issues, and ensuring adherence to company credit policies.

Key Responsibilities

Credit Control & Collections

  • Manage a portfolio of customer accounts and ensure timely collection of outstanding arrears.
  • Ensure customer records are updated and maintained.
  • Deal with customer e-mail and telephone queries.
  • Send statements and reminder letters.
  • Send out payment links via email.
  • Contact customers via telephone, email, and written correspondence to secure payment.
  • Monitor aged debt reports and take appropriate legal action to reduce overdue balances.
  • Escalate high-risk accounts and potential bad debts to management.
  • Post and allocate daily incoming payments.

Account Management

  • Reconcile customer accounts and investigate discrepancies.
  • Resolve invoice, payment, and query issues in collaboration with internal departments.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date customer records.
  • Review customer payment performance and provide recommendations regarding credit limits.

Risk Management

  • Perform credit checks on new and existing customers.
  • Assist in assessing credit risk and identifying potential exposure and setting credit limits.
  • Ensure compliance with company credit insurance policies and procedures.
  • Support the preparation of documentation for legal or external debt collection where required.
  • Pro-actively assess bad debts and maintain consistent adherence to write off process.

Reporting & Administration

  • Maintain accurate account notes and collection activity records.
  • Produce regular reports on aged debt, cash collection performance, and disputed accounts.
  • Support month-end and year-end financial processes.
  • Assist with cash allocation and account reconciliation activities where required.

Essential

  • Previous experience in Credit Control role.
  • Strong debt collection and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Good numerical and analytical abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Desirable

  • Experience using ERP systems
  • Knowledge of credit risk assessment and management.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced finance environment.
  • Relevant finance qualification or studying towards one.
