Job Description:

Principal Ecologist

( Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, London or Edinburgh )

Are you an experienced ecologist looking to take the lead on nationally significant projects while mentoring the next generation of specialists? Our client is looking for a Principal Ecologist to join their growing team and play a key role in delivering high-profile infrastructure, renewable energy and development projects across the UK.

As a Principal Ecologist, you’ll provide technical leadership across a diverse portfolio, leading protected species surveys, ecological assessments and complex project delivery from early feasibility through to construction and post-consent. You’ll work closely with multidisciplinary teams, helping clients navigate ecological constraints while delivering practical, sustainable solutions.

This is an opportunity to influence both projects and people. Alongside producing and reviewing high-quality technical work—including Ecological Impact Assessments, Habitats Regulations Assessments, Biodiversity Net Gain assessments, mitigation strategies, Ecological Management Plans and protected species licence applications—you’ll mentor junior ecologists, build strong client relationships and support business development.

We’re looking for an experienced ecological consultant, a relevant degree (or equivalent), strong technical expertise and a commercial mindset. You’ll ideally hold one or more Natural England protected species survey licences, be a Full Member of CIEEM (CEcol/CEnv desirable), and have a proven track record of managing projects, clients and budgets. Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach are essential, as is a full UK driving licence.

In return, our client offers the opportunity to join a collaborative, employee-focused consultancy where professional development is genuinely encouraged. You’ll have access to structured training, mentoring, technical knowledge sharing and the chance to help shape the future direction of the ecology team. Flexible and hybrid working arrangements, varied and meaningful projects, and clear opportunities for career progression make this an excellent opportunity for an ambitious Principal Ecologist ready for their next challenge.

please be assured that all communications will be in the strictest of confidence.
